Fuerteventura in a nutshell<\/h2>\n\n

Formerly known as Fortaventure, Fuerteventura is the second-largest island in<\/strong> Spain’s Canary archipelago<\/strong>. The island is located in theAtlantic Ocean<\/strong>, around 100 kilometers off the coast of southern Morocco. It is characterized by arid landscapes<\/strong> of dunes and volcanoes.<\/p>\n\n

Formed by volcanic eruptions over twenty million years ago, Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands<\/strong>. Its first inhabitants, the Guanches or Majoreros<\/em>, probably arrived from North Africa around the 1st<\/sup> millennium BC. Other peoples followed, including the Phoenicians (11th<\/sup> century BC), Greeks, Romans, Arabs (999 AD) and Moors, but none established permanent settlements. <\/p>\n\n

In 1408, Jean de B\u00e9thencourt, a Frenchman in the service of Castile, subdued the Guanches during an expedition to the Canary Islands. In 1424, Fuerteventura became Spanish<\/strong> and, in 1456, feudalism<\/strong> was established.<\/p>\n\n

In 1740, the English attempted to retake the island from the Spanish, but their two attempts to invade failed. In 1836, feudal law was abolished. Fuerteventura became an autonomous region in 1912<\/strong>. By the 1960s, tourism had become the island’s main economic activity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The island of Fuerteventura has an international airport<\/strong> (FUE) with direct flights to many European and national cities (Madrid, Barcelona, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, etc.).<\/p>\n

Fuerteventura enjoys a pleasant year-round climate<\/strong>, making it an ideal destination for holidaymakers and families with children.<\/p>\n

The island’s climate is characterized by very mild winters<\/strong> (between 15 and 21\u00b0C), similar to spring, and relatively hot (25 to 30\u00b0C), sunny summers<\/strong>. Particularly exposed to the north-easterly trade winds, the island is also under the infleunce of the chergui<\/strong>, a very hot wind from the Sahara that can reduce visibility below 200 meters and cause temperatures to rise by more than ten degrees.<\/p>\n

Although mostly dry and sunny, the climate varies from region to region. The coast and areas more exposed to the wind are cooler than sheltered inland areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u279c We took advantage of the Carnival vacations to break the winter dreariness by going in search of a little sunshine. Although the heat isn’t intense at this time of year, the more than pleasant temperatures make it possible to<\/p>\n

Fuerteventura’s roads are generally in good condition and provide easy access to the island’s beaches and various attractions. For greater flexibility in our travels, we decided to rent a car<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

However, it is possible to travel by bus and cab between the island’s main towns and tourist areas<\/strong>. However, it’s best to agree on the fare before getting into a cab, and don’t forget to ask if your accommodation offers a shuttle service.<\/p>\n
