Lake Naivasha at a glance<\/h2>\n\n

Located around 90 kilometers northwest of Nairobi<\/strong>, Lake Naivasha is one of the only freshwater basins in the Great Rift Valley<\/strong>. Its name comes from the Masai word Nai’posha<\/em>, meaning “turbulent waters”, in reference to the sudden storms that can be triggered. <\/p>\n\n

Located at an altitude of 1884 metres<\/strong>, Lake Naivasha covers an area of 139 km2<\/sup><\/strong>. Very shallow<\/strong>, averaging 6 meters, its surface area varies greatly according to the volume of precipitation<\/strong>, up to 1,000 km2<\/sup> during the rainy season.<\/p>\n\n

End of the day on the heights of Lake Naivasha<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

Bordered by the rugged slopes of the Longonot volcano<\/strong>, swamps and acacia forests, the lake is a veritable sanctuary for over 400 species of birds<\/strong>, as well as a large number of hippos<\/strong>. Since 1995, the lake has been recognized as a Ramsar site<\/strong>, making it an aquatic ecosystem of worldwide importance<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Between 1937 and 1950, Lake Naivasha was used as a landing site by Imperial Airways seaplanes. Today, the entire region is a major producer of roses and cut flowers for export<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
