It first appeared in Pennsylvania in the late 18th century as &#8220;Indian Summer&#8221;. The term then spread to the New York and New England regions around 1798. It quickly crossed borders, establishing itself in Canada around 1821 and reaching England around 1830. French-speaking Canadians translated it as &#8220;Summer of the Indians&#8221;.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although this name seems to evoke a direct link with aboriginal peoples, it was in fact popularized by European settlers in North America at the same time. Various theories attempt to explain the origin of this name: some see it as a reference to the natives who took advantage of this period of autumnal warmth to hunt and prepare for winter. Others put forward a spiritual explanation, interpreting this sudden warmth as a gift from spirits or divinities.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"indian-summer-myths-and-realities\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indian Summer: Myths and Realities<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Quebec, a popular legend has it that Indian summer is a blessing from the spirits, offering humans a final reprieve to complete their harvests and prepare for winter. Another legend, that of the &#8220;Indian Summer Hunt&#8221;, describes hunters flocking to the woods to take advantage of this last breath of warmth before the arrival of the cold. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contrary to what its name might suggest, Indian summer doesn&#8217;t occur in summer, but in autumn, usually between mid-October and mid-November, after the first frosts. The phenomenon manifests itself as a brief period of unusual warmth, in a season when temperatures are normally expected to fall gradually. It offers a last moment of mildness before the rigors of winter set in.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people imagine that Indian summer arrives every year at a specific time and lasts for several weeks. In reality, this phenomenon has no fixed date and often lasts only a few days, following an autumnal frost, accompanied by warm, sunny days. It can occur at any time between mid-October and mid-November, but some years it doesn&#8217;t appear at all due to unfavorable weather conditions.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"various-names-of-indian-summer-around-the-world\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Various Names of Indian Summer Around the World<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In France, before Joe Dassin&#8217;s song popularized the expression &#8220;Indian summer&#8221;, it was common to speak of &#8220;l&#8217;\u00e9t\u00e9 de la Saint-Martin&#8221;, a festival celebrated on November 11, the day Saint Martin died. In Brittany, this period corresponds to &#8220;an hanv c&#8217;hraden&#8221; or &#8220;the summer of ferns&#8221;, when ferns take on their autumnal yellow and red hues.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Germany, this period is known as &#8220;Altweibersommer&#8221; (&#8220;old wives&#8217; summer&#8221;), while in Sweden it&#8217;s known as &#8220;All Saints&#8217; summer&#8221;. In Italy, it&#8217;s known as &#8220;l&#8217;estate di San Martino&#8221;, and in England it&#8217;s sometimes referred to as &#8220;St. Luke&#8217;s summer&#8221; (October 18) or, as in French, &#8220;St. Martin&#8217;s summer&#8221;.
