Located in the Indian Ocean, 870 kilometers east of Madagascar and 170 kilometers from Reunion Island, Mauritius covers an area of 1,865 km\u00b2<\/strong>. It is 65 kilometers long and 45 kilometers wide. <\/p>\n\n Although of volcanic origin, Mauritius no longer has any active volcanoes. There are, however, some extinct craters<\/strong>, including the famous Trou aux Cerfs. The island’s highest peak is Piton de la Rivi\u00e8re Noire<\/strong>, at 828 meters.<\/p>\n\n One of Mauritius’s greatest assets is without doubt the ethnic mix of its people<\/strong>. A look back at the events that have shaped the cultural identity of an island steeped in history…<\/p>\n Probably discovered by the Arabs in the Middle Ages<\/strong>, Mauritius passed into the hands of the Portuguese, who took advantage of the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 to hijack the trade in spices, gold, ivory and slaves. The Portuguese used the island as a stopover, and weren’t interested in it in any other way.<\/p>\n \n<\/p>\n\n In 1598, a Dutch squadron landed in Mauritius<\/strong> under the command of Admiral Wybrand van Warwyck. The island is named Mauritius in honor of Maurice de Nassau<\/strong>, the Dutch stathouder. To make their settlement on the island more profitable, the Dutch developed the slave trade from Madagascar and tried to introduce sugar cane in 1639, but they were unable to do so. cyclones, disease and rats soon got the better of their efforts. They finally abandoned the island in 1710.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \n<\/p>\n\n In 1715, the French, <\/strong>commanded by Captain Guillaume Dufresne d’Arsel, took possession of the island on behalf of Louis XIV. They renamed it “Isle de France”<\/strong>. As early as 1725, adaptation of the 1685 Code Noir encouraged the arrival of thousands of slaves from Madagascar and East Africa to cultivate coffee and spice plants. In 1735, Governor Mah\u00e9 de La Bourdonnais founded the capital Port-Louis, developed port facilities and reintroduced sugar cane. While Isle de France had just 1,000 inhabitants in 1735, the population had risen to 20,000 by 1767, including 15,000 slaves.<\/p>\n \n<\/p>\n\n In 1809, the British<\/strong>, envious of the French, occupied Rodrigues Island, then landed with 10,000 men at Cap Malheureux in Mauritius<\/strong>. In 1814, Mauritius regained its name when it officially became part of the British Empire<\/strong>. The population then stood at 73,000, 80% of whom were slaves. After two generations, the lingua franca of African and French slaves, Mauritian Creole, became the mother tongue of the descendants of slaves<\/strong>. Few in number and with no intention of inhabiting the island, the British accepted that the inhabitants of Mauritius and Rodrigues would continue to use their language, religion, civil code and traditions.<\/p>\n \n<\/p>\n\n In 1835, slavery was abolished<\/strong> in all British colonies. Workers from China and India (“engag\u00e9s”) began to replace former slaves in the sugarcane fields. Between 1835 and 1907, 450,000 Indians emigrated<\/strong>: the ethnic composition of the inhabitants changed radically and the Creole language was enriched with English and Indian words.<\/p>\n \n<\/p>\n\n Until 1903, Mauritius and the Seychelles were administered as a single colony by Great Britain. From the 1930s onwards, popular movements in favor of democratization began to emerge. On March 12, 1968, Mauritius adopted a new constitution and declared independence<\/strong>. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam becomes first Prime Minister, with Queen Elizabeth II remaining Head of State as Queen of Mauritius. In 1992, parliament abolished the monarchy. Mauritius became a republic on March 12, 1992<\/strong> but remains a member of the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n \n<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n From Paris, many airlines offer daily departures to Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. If you plan well in advance, you can buy round-trip tickets for around \u20ac1,000. The flight typically takes an average of 11 to 12 hours (non-stop), with a time difference of 3 hours in winter and 2 hours in summer.<\/p>\n\n With a tropical climate and water temperatures ranging from 20\u00b0C to 27\u00b0C, Mauritius is a pleasant destination all year round<\/strong>. It has two seasons, reversed from those of the northern hemisphere: a rainy season and a dry season.<\/p>\n\n While Mauritius is best known for its luxurious beachfront hotels, it’s also possible to stay in a villa, bed & breakfast, guest house or glamping. There are many hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs between Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. Stretching for almost 3 kilometers from Trou aux Biches to Pointe aux Canonniers, Mont Choisy beach is the longest beach in Mauritius<\/strong>. In Trou aux Biches, the coral reef is just 250 meters from the beach, making it one of the best places for snorkeling.<\/p>\n\n On the west side, the sunsets over the sea are a never-ending spectacle<\/strong>. With its long, sandy beaches, Flic-en-Flac is the most popular tourist village on this side of the island. There’s also Tamarin for surfers, Rivi\u00e8re Noire, and La Gaulette, a small fishing village.<\/p>\n\n To the southwest, Le Morne is a small peninsula offering pristine beaches, shallow waters and some of the island’s finest luxury hotels<\/strong>. The reef is just a few meters from the beach, making it ideal for scuba diving and water sports such as kitesurfing. <\/p>\n\n The wilder south of the island is ideal for nature lovers<\/strong>. For beaches, head to the southeast (Mah\u00e9bourg and Blue Bay) or the southwest, near Le Morne.<\/p>\n\n Located in the south-east of Mauritius<\/strong>, close to Mahebourg, the village of Blue Bay offers breathtaking views of the island of Deux Cocos<\/strong>.
