Location: Situated on the southern coast of the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt has land borders with Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, the Red Sea to the east, and Israel and the Gaza Strip to the northeast. The country covers an area of approximately
1,001,450 km², of which only 3.2% is arable.

Capital: Cairo

Population: With over 109 million inhabitants in 2021, Egypt is the third most populous country in Africa.

Official languages: Arabic

Currency: The Egyptian pound (EGP) is worth around 53 EGP to 1 euro. ATMs are common in Egypt (airports, hotels, city centers), and bank cards are widely accepted. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday, 8.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Time difference: +1h to France and Belgium

Flight time: 4 to 5 hours on average from Europe

Entry formalities: Valid passport or identity card, valid at least 6 months after date of return, for Belgian and French nationals. Tourist visa required (available on arrival or online at least 7 days before departure – $25 for single entry).

Health: No vaccinations are compulsory, but it is advisable to check that your current vaccinations are up to date. To avoid turista, opt for bottled drinks, hot, cooked food and fruit that has been peeled or washed in treated water. We strongly advise against swimming in the Nile, due to the risk of parasites. In your first-aid kit, remember to take mosquito repellent, sun cream, painkillers and anti-diarrhoeals. Warning: some painkillers, such as Tramadol and opiate derivatives, are considered drugs in Egypt. You can carry a small quantity if you have a valid prescription, ideally translated into English or Arabic, as well as any ongoing treatment.

In your suitcase: hat, light but covering clothes for historic sites and comfortable shoes. If you’re taking a dahabieh cruise on the Nile, remember to pack “indoor” shoes to protect the wooden decks of these traditional boats.

Good to know: Respect for Muslim customs is essential in Egypt. It is recommended to take off one’s shoes before entering a room, and women must cover their heads when visiting mosques. During a family meal, it is advisable to wait for the blessing and to use the right hand to eat. The possession of knives, drones and binoculars, even small ones, is forbidden without prior authorization.
