New York | From the Summit Vanderbilt to the Museum of Arts and Design

This morning, surprise: New York woke up under a thick white coat. Poorly equipped to cope with these wintry conditions, we improvise with our warmest clothes before setting off on the fifth and final day of our city trip.

The first stop of the day is just a 20-minute walk from our hotel. Yet, with the snow covering the streets and the icy wind biting our faces, each step seems to take forever. Wrapped up as best we can, we push forward, motivating ourselves: the idea of discovering the Summit One Vanderbilt, snug in the warmth, and admiring a breathtaking view of a snow-covered New York pushes us to brave this polar cold.

View from Summit One Vanderbilt

Once there, the effort is amply rewarded. The Summit One Vanderbilt sits atop the One Vanderbilt skyscraper, due to open in September 2020. This 427-metre giant, mainly occupied by offices, is the fourth-tallest building in New York, just behind One World Trade Center. The observatory, located 335 meters above sea level and spread over four floors, offers a unique visual and sensory experience.

From its huge picture windows and suspended glass platforms, the view of Manhattan is simply breathtaking. And for photography enthusiasts, it’s a rare opportunity to capture the Chrysler Building from an unusual angle, almost within reach thanks to the skyscraper’s proximity.

But Summit isn’t limited to panoramic views. Theimmersive Air installation, designed by artist Kenzo Digital, transforms the space into a dreamlike work of art. Mirrors on the floor, walls and ceiling reflect the immensity of New York, giving the impression of floating in an infinite space. The more adventurous can venture onto Levitation, a glass platform suspended in the void, or opt for the all-glass exterior elevator, offering a vertiginous climb with a breathtaking view.

Good to know:

  • Opening hours: Open daily from 8am to 10pm (last entry at 8:30pm)
  • Access: Located next to Grand Central Terminal
  • Ticket prices: From $43 for adults, $37 for children aged 6 to 12. Online reservations strongly recommended.

We’re off again for another 30-minute walk, but this time the sun’s rays, albeit wintry, bring some comfort. We head up 5th Avenue towards Central Park, which is unrecognizable under its thick layer of snow.

Just two days ago, this verdant park was bathed in bright sunshine. Today, it seems frozen in a fairytale atmosphere: the silent paths, frosted trees and enveloping calm give it a charm worthy of a winter fairytale.

For a warm finish, we head to the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), located in Columbus Circle, a place where contemporary art meets design and craftsmanship. At the moment, admission is free every Friday, a great opportunity to discover the exhibition Carrie Moyer and Sheila Pepe: Tabernacles for Trying Times.

Carrie Moyer and Sheila Pepe, whose artistic evolution is inseparable from their twenty-five-year love affair, have transformed their personal bond into an exceptional creative collaboration. Along the way, they have broken down homophobic and sexist barriers to build internationally acclaimed careers.

Moyer, a painter, has developed a visual language that blends abstraction, body shapes and logo-like imagery. Pepe, on the other hand, is best known for her use of industrial materials, which she knots, knits and crochets to create monumental structures. The exhibition features works from the last decade, illustrating how Moyer and Pepe have influenced each other while preserving their distinct identities as artists, researchers, women, lesbians and activists.

A fine way to conclude our stay, between reflection and artistic wonder.
